Newpipe for desktop update#
I found F-Droid to be a trustable source for this purpose, and you should download the F-Droid client to manage and update NewPipe automatically. Unfortunately, the app isn’t available on Google Play Store, you’ll have to download from other sources. It will let you listen to YouTube audio only with an audio icon showing in a separate PIP window.
I have tested many apps for this purpose but only found NewPipe to be the most reliable one. On Android, you’ll have to use a third-party YouTube audio only app. However, Firefox users can use the YouTube Audio add-on for Firefox to get similar functionality. Unfortunately, the Audio Only YouTube extension isn’t available for Firefox users. The video page will automatically reload and the video will start playing. If you want to watch a particular video, then click on the Audio Only YouTube extension button to disable it. If you don’t want to see the thumbnail as well, you’ll have to disable images in Chrome. There would be a text on top confirming that only audio is playing, and you will only see the video thumbnail in the video player. Now open any YouTube video and only its audio will be played.
